Agricultural microbiology is closely involved with research on organic manuring, recycling of waste in crop cultivation and biological nitrogen fixation which are aimed at saving energy and supplementing fertilizer inputs in crop cultivation. Research of these aspects of bioconversion is crucial to the economy of developing nations which are facing the impacts of energy crisis. In advanced countries, technologies are being perfected for the bioconversion of wastes and surpluses of agricultural commodities into food, feed and fuel by microbial fermentation. Hazardous and environment-polluting pesticides are either used with caution or are being gradually replaced by biopesticides of microbial origin.
