India witnessed a significant increase in grain productivity and cropping intensity till the 1980s. Thereafter, several factors led to a slow down in the growth rate. One of the major reasons for this decline in the growth rate is the large scale nutrient removal through crop harvests on one hand and low level of replenishments through inadequate nutrient supply, causing mining of nutrients from the soil on the other. In india the fertilizer consumption has increased manifold from 65.6 thousand tonnes in 1951-52 to 20 million tonnes in the year 2008-09. Though, there is an increasing trend in fertilizer consumption of the country, the annual gap of 10 million tonnes of nutrients still exists between nutrients removed by crops and supplied through fertilizers.
