In India, maize is the third important cereal crop produced after wheat and rice. Of the total maize produced in India, 49% is used as poultry feed. Maize protein has poor nutritional value for monogastric animals because of lower levels of essential amino acids such as lysine, tryptophan and threonine. This has led to the development of quality protein maize which has higher content of lysine (>30-40%) and tryptophan (>35-45%) than the conventional maize. Some other high maize cultivars such as waxy maize, high oil maize, high protein-low phytate maize are also developed for feeding purposes ER -
