Rural development is the dynamic process of development of the rural people through vaious programmes and projects so that they can become self-reliant citizens of the country. The work is done by involving various agencies and o0rganisations, and above all, the local people themselves. The development of the rural people is essentail for development of the rest of the people, via-a-vis the whole country. This shall give economic, political and social stability of the country. In view of liberalisation and globalisation of the economy, rual India virtually provides an unlimited market for bi\uying and selling of national and international products and services. Rural development programmes have to be reoriented to incorporate this vision. This calls for a higher level of investment in the rural sector, in terms of funds, facilities and trained personnel. Some perspectives of rural development are highlighted in this chapter
